With the Holidays come Holiday Tournaments. Although the boys and girls played well, neither was able to take the crown. Wrestling also had their holiday tournament over the weekend. Lets see how it all played out.

Girls Basketball:
Paramus Catholic 40, Pascack Valley 20 (Friday)
After defeating Ridgefield Park on Thursday in the quarterfinals of their Christmas Tournament, they had the luxury of playing against a talented Paramus Catholic team in the semifinals.
The problem all year for this team is scoring the basketball and it hurt them again on Friday. The Indians could simply not score enough points to stay with the Paladins.
At halftime, Valley was only able to manage 7 points. By the end of the game, they were barely able to score 20.
Defense has never been a problem for Pascack Valley. Their offensive is where the Indians need to pick it up if they are going to be looked at as a serious contender in North Jersey.
Pascack Valley 46, Holy Angels 38 (Sunday)
Record: 4-2

Boys Basketball:
As they do every year, Pascack Valley played in the Cliffside Park Holiday Tournament on Thursday and Friday. After defeating Hoboken 68-64, they faced Ramapo for the tournament title.
If you like offense, this wasn't the game for you. Both teams were sloppy early on thanks to pressure defense and careless mistakes. Despite the turnovers, the Indians held a 3 point lead after the first quarter.
The second quarter is where Ramapo began to capitalize off Valley's turnovers. They outscored the Indians 16-8 in the second to take a 30-25 lead into halftime.
Although the third period wasn't sloppy, it certainly was low scoring. Neither of the shooters on both teams were able to get their shots to fall. The teams managed a combined 13 points and Ramapo still held a 4 point lead going into the fourth.
Despite the poor shooting afternoon, Valley never gave up. With a Kyle Onderdonk three pointer, the game was tied 43 all with only 1:53 left in the game.
At this point, the team that executed better won the game. Ramapo scored next to take a 45-43 lead. Senior Sean Hynekamp was fouled but only managed to make 1 of 2 and Valley was forced to foul down by 1. After Ramapo split a pair to extend the lead to a deuce, Kyle Onderdonk missed a three pointer to take the lead and Valley was forced to foul with only 13 seconds left to play. Ramapo's Matt Grassi made both free throws, put the Green Raiders up by 4, and clinched the tournament title for Ramapo.
Valley was lead in scoring by Sean Hynekamp who scored 9 points and was the bright spot in a mostly sloppy performance. The growth of Hynekamp will only add another weapon and make Valley that much more dangerous.
Despite the disappointment, Valley can learn a lot from a game of this magnitude. If they limit the turnovers and take better shots, the Indians should be better off going forward.

Seymour Leads Valley to Win over Hoboken
Coming into the game against Hoboken, Jamie Seymour had only recorded 15 points.
It had been a disappointing start for the Senior who was looked at to be one of the leading scorers on the Indian's roster.
On Thursday afternoon, Seymour became that guy by scoring a game high 22 points and leading Pascack Valley to a 68-64 win over Hoboken in the Cliffside Park Christmas Tournament.
"My teammates fed me the ball in nice positions to score and I took advantage of that."
The game started off slowly for the Indians. Their three pointers rimmed out and their defense allowed too many easy buckets. At the end of a sloppy first quarter, Pascack Valley found themselves down 15-11.
It was in the second quarter where Seymour made a name for himself. His 7 points combined with Ryan Onderdonk's 11 sparked the Indians offense and gave them a 37-29 lead going into halftime.
Although not always crisp, Pascack Valley was able to control the second half. Hoboken would continue to keep it close, but could never take the lead.
"It's all about execution," said Seymour.
In the end, free throw shooting, stout defense and timely offense gave Valley the 4 point win.
Despite the good win, Pascack Valley has no time to celebrate as they will play for the championship against Ramapo tomorrow.
When asked about the key to this game, Seymour said it best.
" Ramapo is big and strong. We have to grab every loose ball and clean up on the boards." With Seymour and Schneider doing the dirty work down low, Pascack Valley should have no problem dealing with the toughness that Ramapo brings.
"If we do all of these things and not let them have any second chance opportunities " said Seymour, "We will be fine and the game will work itself out."
If one thing is for sure, if Seymour plays like he did today, Pascack Valley will be just fine.
Record: 3-1

Weekend Recap: 12/21 - 12/23
With Boys and Girls Basketball playing on Thursday, the slate for the weekend was pretty light. Lets see how hockey and wrestling did in their respective matches.
_________
Wrestling:
In their quad meet on Saturday, Pascack Valley wrestling represented their school well. In three matches, they went 2-1. They defeated Wayne Hills and Lakeland and lost to Hawthorne.
Dylan Bader had the best day for the Indians with three pins. Cory Gottlieb, Alex Moore, Cameron McLearie, Danny White and Zach Lanzalotto all finished the day 3-0.
The Indians have a long layoff with their next match coming a couple of days after the New Year.
Record: 2-2
Next Match: Friday, January 4th at 7 PM against Indian Hills (Away)
_______
Hockey:
Pascack Valley 2, Old Tappan 1 (Friday)
After starting the season 1-2, this was a big win for the Indians against a talented Old Tappan squad.
Neither team scored in the first period, but each team had their chances. It wasn't until the second period when Sam Komrower scored for Pascack Valley, putting them ahead 1-0.
However, that lead would not hold. Old Tappan responded minutes later and tied the game at 1.
The tie was broken with 5:05 left in the game by guess who? Sam Komrower. The Senior scored both goals for the Indians and basically willed his team to victory.
This could be the start of something good for Valley as they head into the New Year.
Pascack Valley 2, Tenafly 0 (Sunday)
Two days after their win over Old Tappan, Valley was back on the Ice Sunday Night against Tenafly.
Sam Komrower continued his stellar play by scoring late in the second period to give the Indians a 1-0 lead.
Late in the third, Devon Palmieri sealed the win with a goal of his own.
With a 2-0 win, PV has won back to back games.

Boys Basketball:
Pascack Valley 60, Tenafly 53
It wasn't pretty.
But wins don't always have to be pretty.
Pascack Valley learned that on Thursday night when they defeated Teaneck 60-53 in overtime.
The game was back and force throughout. However, there were too many turnovers by both teams, causing the game to be sloppy.
In the fourth quarter, Valley had a chance to score the final bucket and come away with a win. A Kyle Schneider pass to Nick Soravilla led the senior to a layup that just rolled out. The contest would go to overtime.
The overtime period was dominated by the Indians. They caused several turnovers and were solid from the charity strike. Tenafly couldn't answer and Pascack Valley picked up a big win.
Kyle Onderdonk was fantastic once again for the Indians, scoring 22 points. The junior looks like Valley's go to guy early in the season.
Ryan Onderdonk and Chris Jackson were also solid for the Indians, each chipping in 16 points a piece.
With a 2-1 record, Pascack Valley should be happy with their position going into the holiday tournament in Cliffside Park.
However, if they want to compete in a tournament of that magnitude, they will have to limit their turnovers and convert easy layups and free throws more often.
If and when those things improve, Pascack Valley is going to be that much harder to beaet.

Girls Basketball:
Pascack Valley 41, Tenafly 25
After dropping their first game to Teaneck on Tuesday night, Pascack Valley was looking to get back on track against Tenafly.
Things did not look so good in the first quarter. The Indians couldn't buy a basket and scored only 4 points in the quarter.
The game changed once Junior Lisa Marcellari entered the game. She immediately hit two three pointers and a corner jump shot as a part of a 17-0 run by Pascack Valley. By the time halftime had arrived, Pascack Valley had a commanding 21-11 lead.
The second half was more about preserving the lead rather than scoring the basketball. Senior guards Erin Smith and Dara Liebeskind made enough plays to keep Valley on top.
The Indians improved to 2-0 on their home floor with a 41-25 win.
With Christmas break coming up, Pascack Valley will look to make some noise in the Christmas tournament while developing even better team chemistry in the process.
Overall, a 2-1 start is a pretty good way to go into the New Year.

Boys Basketball: Valley Shows Heart and Toughness in Loss to Teaneck
If you want to be the best, you have to beat the best.
Teaneck came into Pascack Valley High School as the top team in North Jersey and the underrated Indians gave them everything they could handle.
In the end, Teaneck proved too much and defeated Pascack Valley 79-67, handing them their first loss of the season.
"It feels good knowing that we could play with them," said Junior Ryan Onderdonk, "because now we know that we have a great chance for the next time we play."
Coming into the contest, not many people gave Valley a fighting chance. They were an unproven bunch while Teaneck had been the staple of high school basketball in North Jersey for quite some time.
The Indians silenced the doubters pretty quick, trading baskets with Teaneck throughout the first quarter. The deficit was four at the end of the first and Coach Coleman had to be pleased with how his team came out and competed.
The second quarter was much of the same. Teaneck would score some easy baskets, but the Indians would continue to answer. The shooting of the Onderdonk twins along with the charges taken by Senior Kyle Schneider kept Pascack Valley in the game before halftime.
At intermission, Pascack Valley was down 35-31 and had the players and fans of Teaneck shaking their heads.
The Teaneck coach must have gotten into his players during the break because his team came out with a different intensity on the defensive end of the floor.
"I thought we gave up too many points," said Onderdonk. "and had too many turnovers that let Teaneck score easy baskets (in transition)."
During the first couple minutes of the third, Valley was having trouble advancing the ball past half court. Senior Nick Soravilla and Junior Chris Jackson were being heavily pressured and it seemed that there was no one there to bail them out. Teaneck scored the first 10 points of the third to take a 14 point lead.
At this point, Pascack Valley could have given up. They had played with the best team in the county for a half and could have settled with that. Instead, the Indians showed their Valley toughness and clawed their way back. With a 9-0 run, Valley ended the 3rd only down 53-48.
It was only a matter of time before the countless turnovers caught up with the Indians. Teaneck made a few easy buckets to begin the forth and never looked back. Valley continued to make shots, but simply couldn't stop Teaneck on the defensive end.
"You're not going to win too often when you let up 79 points," said Onderdonk.
Final score: Teaneck 79, Pascack Valley 67.
Kyle Onderdonk led the Indians with 19 points and Ryan Onderdonk added 15. Kyle Schneider (13) and Chris Jackson (12) were also in double figures.
Valley certainly should not be disappointed with their performance. They were a couple of plays away from making this a game down the stretch. The Indians deserve to keep their heads held high as they have put the rest of Bergen County on notice that they are a team to be reckoned with.
Despite the loss, Onderdonk did have some positive takeaway.
"Now we know that we can compete with anyone in the county."

Trailing 26-14 at halftime, Pascack Valley had to be somewhat pleased with their performance.

Pascack Valley was dealt with playing the best team in Bergen County and never backed down.
The first half was a back and forth affair that ended with Teaneck only leading 35-31.
However, the beginning of the third quarter was a different story as Teaneck turned up the defense. They opened the quarter with a 10-0 run to take a 14 point lead. At that point, many thought the Indians were finished.
That thought was proved untrue as Pascack Valley went on a 9-0 run to end the quarter. They faced a 5 point deficit heading into the final period of play.
In the end, Teaneck's offense was too much for Pascack Valley to handle and the #1 team in North Jersey was able to pull away.
Kyle Onderdonk scored 19 points and Ryan Onderdonk added 15 for an Indians squad that should be very pleased with their performance.

Weekend Recap: 12/14 - 12/16
Although some sports have already begun, Friday marked the official first day of the Winter Sports season. That being said, this was a very busy weekend in the Valley. Lets see how each of our teams did.
_________________________________________________________________
Girls Basketball:
Pascack Valley 39, Demarest 18 (Friday)
When looking at this year's Girls Basketball team, defense was never a concern. With Catherine Rodgers, Valley's leading scorer, graduating last season, the question was on the offensive end.
Who is going to score?
With 15 points and 6 three pointers, Senior guard Michelle Garay answered that question real quick.
While Garay led the offense, the defense was a team effort, only allowing Demarest to score 18 points in the game.
Sara Petro added 8 points and Erin Smith had 5 for a Valley team looking for a second scorer behind Garay.
Combined with their stout defense, finding a second go-to scorer is going to make Pascack Valley very tough to beat.
Record: 1-0
Next Game: Tuesday, December 18th at 7 PM against Teaneck (Away)

Boys Basketball:
Pascack Valley 72, Demarest 43 (Friday)
The Indians used stifling defense and an efficient offense to easily dispose of the Norseman 72-43 on Friday Night.
Junior Kyle Onderdonk lead Valley in scoring with 19 points and his brother Ryan added 15. Seniors Nick Soravilla and Kyle Schneider were also in double figures.
Pascack Valley shot 7-18 from behind the arc (38%) with most of the threes being made by the Onderdonks.
This was a good start for the Indians who play Teaneck on Tuesday in their home opener.

Hockey:
Saint Joseph's 6, Pascack Valley 3 (Saturday)
After a cancellation earlier in the week, PV puck was anxious to get onto the ice Saturday against St. Joes Regional.
Early in the first period, John Scarano scored for the Indians, giving them an early 1-0 lead. However, before the period had ended, St. Joes had tied the game at 1.
The game was kept tied until Robby Sawyer scored with 10:25 left in the 2nd, giving Valley a 2-1 lead. Again, St. Joseph's would respond.
With the 2nd period winding down, Valley's Chris Zarielo put one in the back of net and the Indians were leading once again.
Unfortunately, that would be last time. St. Joes scored four unanswered goals to take the game 6-3.
Although disappointing for the Indians, there are plenty more games for them to get back on track.
One thing this team doesn't lack is support. The crowd at these games has been remarkable so far and should continue to be in the future.

With a good week of practice, Pascack Valley should be more than ready to take on Old Tappan Friday night.
Record: 1-2

Boys Basketball: Valley Uses Defense to Stifle Demarest in Season Opener
In a game where Pascack Valley scored 72 points, the key to this win was...
The defense?
"Demarest does not have a sped up game so we wanted to use this defense to make them feel uncomfortable," said Senior Kyle Schneider, "and we did just that."
The defense he was talking about? The 1-3-1 zone.
With a stout defense and efficient offense, Pascack Valley came out of Demarest with a 72-43 win on Friday Night.
A traditionally man to man team, Pascack Valley worked on the 1-3-1 run and jump defense all week in practice. They hoped this defense would surprise the Norsemen and force them out of their game.
"We have practiced it so much," added Schneider, "but will only use it at certain times during the year."
In the first quarter alone, Pascack Valley caused countless turnovers on defense to give them a 23-7 lead after the opening period.
The second quarter was no different, as the Indians took a demanding 38-16 lead into intermission.
The second half was more of the same. More Demarest turnovers combined with a balanced scoring attack made the Indian's season opener a blowout.
The scoring was led by Juniors Kyle and Ryan Onderdonk. The sharpshooting pair combined for 34 points and made a handful of three pointers.
Senior Kyle Schneider controlled the middle while Chris Jackson and Nick Soravilla ran the offense.
After losing four starters from last year's squad, some believed it would take time for the newcomers to gel together. Little do they know that more than half the players on Valley's team have ample varsity experience.
This is certainly a good start for the Indians, but nothing more than that. Pascack Valley will get back to work as they face Teaneck, the best team in North Jersey, on Tuesday night.
"It's a great confidence booster for the team," said Schneider "because we know that this next game is going to be a challenge. It was good to get this win and start the season off right."
In the locker room immediately following the game, Coach Al Coleman was already thinking about Tuesday's match-up with Teaneck.
"Let's shock the world boys," he said. "Lets shock the world."

Daily Recap: Thursday, December 13th
With most of winter sports playing their season openers tomorrow, Swimming was the only sport on display on Thursday Night. Let's see how the Girls and Boys did at their meet.
Boys Swimming:.
After dropping their first two meets of the season, Boys Swimming was able to pick up a big win against River Dell.
Hopefully they will use this win as momentum for future meets.
Record: 1-2
Next Meet: Saturday, December 15th at 1 PM against Teaneck (Bergen Community College)
Girls Swimming:
A couple days before the first swim meet of the season, I received a text from Senior Swimmer Jenn Iannello. She told me that this team has a lot of depth and a strong season is in store.
Through the first three meets of the season, her statement has held true.
Girls Swimming improved to 3-0 on the season by defeating River Dell 89.5 - 80.5.
Although early in the season, this was a season defining win for the Indians. For the past couple of years, Pascack Valley and River Dell have been co-division champs. This was the first test for a talented Valley squad and they passed with flying colors.
The meet stayed close throughout. In the end, it all came down to the 100 meter breaststroke and the 400 meter freestyle relay.
Pascack Valley was able to win these crucial races to take the meet. With the win, the Indians showed that they are going to be extremely tough to beat this season.
Record: 3-0

Weekend Recap: 11/30 - 12/2
Fall sports are here which means the Weekend Recap is back! While Pascack Valley Hockey and Swimming had their openers, Valley football is going to the State title by ending the career of a coaching legend in the process. Lets see how it all played out.
Football:
Pascack Valley 20, Wayne Hills 11 (Friday)
After Pascack Valley defeated Wayne Hills 35-21 only a few weeks ago, the Patriots had their share of excuses.
They were without their "All-American" Quarterback Kevin Olsen. They were without their two middle linebackers and tight end. Their running back got banged up late in the second half.
Coming into their playoff game, a rematch against Pascack Valley, everyone thought the outcome would be different this time around.
Well everyone obviously does not respect Pascack Valley because that was not the case.
Even with their Miami bound "savior" Kevin Olsen, Pascack Valley defeated Wayne Hills 20-11 to advance to the North 1, Group 4 state title game.
This game was won by the defense, who played their most complete game of the season against a Wayne Hills offense with plenty of weapons.
It wasn't until the second half where the Valley offense got it going. They had two 5 plus minute touchdown drives that the Patriots just could not seem to recover from.
Withe 1 minute and a half left in the game and Wayne Hills trailing 20-11, they set up for a field goal to make it a 6 point game. Their attempt missed wide right and sent Pascack Valley to the title game. They will play second seeded Roxbury next Saturday at Kean University.
Another headline from this game was Wayne Hills Head Coach Chris Olsen. With his youngest son being a senior, this was Olsen's last chance to grab the State Crown.
Instead of retiring in North Carolina with three state championships to end his career, Coach Olsen will have nightmares about Pascack Valley for years to come.
And that is the way it was meant to be.
Record: 11-0
Next Game: Saturday, December 8th at 7 PM against Roxbury at Kean University
Ice Hockey:
Glen Rock 3, Pascack Valley 2 (Saturday)
Pascack Valley puck is back and there was a huge crowd on hand Saturday night for their season opener against Glen Rock.
Unfortunately, Pascack Valley couldn't pull out the win and fell to Glen Rock 3-2.
Glen Rock opened the scoring in the first period, scoring their first goal with 7:23 left to take a 1-0 lead. With 7:20 left in the second, Valley tied the score on a goal from Senior Devon Palmeri. The game would go to the third period tied at 1.
Seven minutes into the third, Senior Sam Komrower gave the Indians a 2-1 lead and looked to have sealed the win for Pascack Valley.
Instead, Glen Rock kept fighting and scored two goals in the final 4 minutes to shock the Indians and take the opener 3-2.
Although disappointing for Pascack Valley, they must not hold their heads. This is a talented team who will only continue to improve as the season goes on. I look forward to following them this season.
Record: 0-1
Next Game: Saturday, December 8th at 9 PM against Northern Highlands (Home)
Swimming:
Both the boys and girls had their first swim meet of the season Sunday night against Tenafly.
The boys suffered a tough loss to a Tenafly team that is one of the best in the area. Their best is yet to come.
As for the girls, they opened their season with a big 109-69 win over a solid Tenafly team. This is a team with a lot of depth coming in and one that should have a very strong season.
To open the season with a win over Tenafly should only give the girls more confidence going forward.
Boys Record: 0-1
Girls Record: 1-0
Next Meet: Monday, December 4th at 8 PM against Old Tappan (Away)
Boys Basketball:
Since I am going to cover the Boys Basketball team throughout the season, I decided to attend their first scrimmage against Garfield to see what this team is all about. After watching them for 6 quarters, this was a solid first outing for the Indians. Here are my observations about this game and the team going forward.
Starters: Jamie Seymour (Senior), Sean Hynekamp (Senior), Chris Jackson (Junior), Kyle Onderdonk (Junior), Ryan Onderdonk (Junior).
1. Three Point Shooting: Coming into the season, it was obvious that this team would shoot the 3 and shoot it well. In their game against Garfield, Valley was 19-30 (63%) from behind the arc, which is a fantastic percentage. I don't believe that this percentage will hold, but will be a big part of this team's success. The only thing that concerns me is the 30 three point attempts. Pascack Valley will have to be more balanced going forward to keep opposing defense on their toes.
2. Consistency: Pascack Valley lit it up in the first quarter. It seemed that everything they were throwing up was going in, finishing the opening period with 24 points. In the second quarter, Valley could not shoot the ball into the ocean, finish with a mere 10 points. To be successful, Pascack Valley must score the ball more consistently or a season of ups and downs is inevitable.
3. The Onderdonk Show: These two junior twins starred for the Indians on Sunday, scoring 73 of Valley's 106 points (69%). After 6 quarters of play, Kyle finished with 40 points while Ryan added 33. With most of their points coming from beyond the arc, it remains to be seen if they can keep this hot shooting throughout the season. If they continue to shoot it like this, Pascack Valley is going to be awfully tough to beat.
4. Bench Scoring: The biggest problem for the Indians this season might be getting scoring from their bench. During the 6 quarters, the bench only accounted for 11 of the 106 points that Pascack Valley scored. To be a dangerous team, that number is going to have to increase. Who is going to provide that scoring? Juniors Sonny Ray Dominguez and Harrison Milacek, along with Senior Dylan Ferraro seem like popular candidates.
5. The Best is Yet to Come: Pascack Valley played without three of its players on Sunday because they are members of the undefeated football team going to the state championship. When they return, Kyle Schneider, Nick Soravilla, and Jake Morra should make a big impact on this team. Schneider is a big man who can step out and hit the mid-range jumper. Soravilla is lightning quick and will continuously get his teammates involved. Morra is a tough player who will make the hustle plays for the Indians. Contributions from these players will be important for Valley moving forward.
