Weekend Recap: 12/28 - 12/30

With the Holidays come Holiday Tournaments. Although the boys and girls played well, neither was able to take the crown. Wrestling also had their holiday tournament over the weekend. Lets see how it all played out.
______________

Girls Basketball:

Paramus Catholic 40, Pascack Valley 20 (Friday)

After defeating Ridgefield Park on Thursday in the quarterfinals of their Christmas Tournament, they had the luxury of playing against a talented Paramus Catholic team in the semifinals.

The problem all year for this team is scoring the basketball and it hurt them again on Friday. The Indians could simply not score enough points to stay with the Paladins.

At halftime, Valley was only able to manage 7 points. By the end of the game, they were barely able to score  20.

Defense has never been a problem for Pascack Valley. Their offensive is where the Indians need to pick it up if they are going to be looked at as a serious contender in North Jersey.

Pascack Valley 46, Holy Angels 38 (Sunday)

Record: 4-2

Next Game: Thursday, January 3rd at 7 PM against Holy Angels (Away)

Boys Basketball:

As they do every year, Pascack Valley played in the Cliffside Park Holiday Tournament on Thursday and Friday. After defeating Hoboken 68-64, they faced Ramapo for the tournament title.

If you like offense, this wasn't the game for you. Both teams were sloppy early on thanks to pressure defense and careless mistakes. Despite the turnovers, the Indians held a 3 point lead after the first quarter.

The second quarter is where Ramapo began to capitalize off Valley's turnovers. They outscored the Indians 16-8 in the second to take a 30-25 lead into halftime.

Although the third period wasn't sloppy, it certainly was low scoring. Neither of the shooters on both teams were able to get their shots to fall. The teams managed a combined 13 points and Ramapo still held a 4 point lead going into the fourth.

Despite the poor shooting afternoon, Valley never gave up. With a Kyle Onderdonk three pointer, the game was tied 43 all with only 1:53 left in the game.

At this point, the team that executed better won the game. Ramapo scored next to take a 45-43 lead. Senior Sean Hynekamp was fouled but only managed to make 1 of 2 and Valley was forced to foul down by 1. After Ramapo split a pair to extend the lead to a deuce, Kyle Onderdonk missed a three pointer to take the lead and Valley was forced to foul with only 13 seconds left to play. Ramapo's Matt Grassi made both free throws, put the Green Raiders up by 4, and clinched the tournament title for Ramapo.

Valley was lead in scoring by Sean Hynekamp who scored 9 points and was the bright spot in a mostly sloppy performance. The growth of Hynekamp will only add another weapon and make Valley that much more dangerous.

Despite the disappointment, Valley can learn a lot from a game of this magnitude. If they limit the turnovers and take better shots, the Indians should be better off going forward.

Record: 3-2
