Weekend Recap 9/27 - 9/30

Almost all Varsity sports faced tough tests this weekend and many of them came out on top. Valley football defeated a Depaul team that had not lost to a public school in three years. Volleyball improved to 7-1 in league play with a big win against Paramus Catholic. Finally, Girls Soccer won a thriller against Paramus Catholic 3-2 in overtime. The season is in full gear and the Indians are ready to make a charge to the finish line.

Girls Volleyball:

Pascack Valley defeats Paramus Catholic 25-20, 25-22 (Thursday)

Although a straight set win for the Indians, this game was never easy. The Indians had to earn this win and their 7th win in league play.

The first set went back and forth with both teams having opportunities to take control. In the end, Pascack Valley came together, won the crucial points, and took the first set 25-20.

It was more of the same for the Indians in the second set. Instead of giving Paramus Catholic a chance at a third set, the Indians closed the door, winning the second set and therefore, taking the match.

With Old Tappan as their only league loss of the season, this team needs to be looked at as one of the best Volleyball teams in North Jersey.

***Note: Old Tappan Volleyball is currently 8-0 on the season, winning all 16 sets they have played.***

Football:

Pascack Valley 33, DePaul 28 (Friday)

During the first three games of the Indians season, they had outscored their opponents 123-20 and had yet to be tested. That all changed Friday night when DePaul, a Catholic School, came to the valley.

Despite their record of 1-2, DePaul was a solid, physical team. They are forced to play Don Bosco and Paramus Catholic early in the season, causing their record to suffer because of it.

Either way, the game was supposed to be a dog fight and that's exactly what it was.

The game started out perfectly for the Indians. On the first play from scrimmage, Junior Jaleel Felton made an interception deep down the sideline. Just a couple of plays after that, Valley scored on a short touchdown run from Senior Chris Garcia.

DePaul responded by pounding their way down the field, scoring easily to make the score 7-6.

Both teams continued to go back and fourth until the score was 14-12 with a couple minutes left in the first half. With DePaul threatening to take a two score lead, Senior Billy Beattie made a huge interception, ending the threat. The Indians would go on to score before the half, making it 20-14.

After holding Pascack Valley to open the second half, DePaul again retook the lead 21-20. By the time the fourth quarter came around, the Indians trailed by one and their undefeated season was in jeopardy.

With two minutes gone in the fourth quarter, Valley took the lead back 27-21 on a touchdown pass from Kyle Schneider to Billy Beattie.

On DePaul's next offensive play, running back Joe Moreno fumbled, giving the ball back to the Indians. Quarterback Kyle Schneider took advantage of the oppurtunity, throwing another touchdown pass, this time to Nick Soravilla, to give Valley the 33-21 lead with 3 minutes to play.

However, the game wasn't over yet. In just two minutes, DePaul roared down the field and scored again, making it 33-28. The game then came down to the onside kick. Soravilla came up big in the clutch again, fielding the onside kick and securing the win for the Indians.

Pascack Valley knew they could be successful, but this win proved that they could beat anyone at anytime.

Record: 4-0

Pascack Valley 0, Ramapo 2

Pascack Valley fell to a tremendous Ramapo team 2-0 on Saturday Night.

The Indians played well, but were unable to supply the offense needed to defeat a team of the caliber of Ramapo.

Record: 4-2-1

Next Game: Monday, October 1st at 7 PM against Hackensack (Home)

Girls Soccer:

Pascack Valley 3, Paramus Catholic 2 (Thursday)

When it comes to the Indian offense, most people look to Senior Dara Liebeskind to get the job done.

She did exactly that on Tuesday night, scoring two goals, including the game winner, to defeat Paramus Catholic 3-2 in overtime.

The first goal from Liebeskind came on a penalty and the next goal came from fellow Senior Cassie Gehan.

The game would then go into overtime with the score tied 2-2. During the OT, the Indians received a corner kick and Junior Rachel Kearney decided to take it. As she kicked it, Liebeskind sprinted in, headed the ball past the goalie, and won the game for the Indians.

A pile up ensued and Pascack Valley Girls Soccer had their third straight win.

Pascack Valley 1, Dumont 0 (Sunday)

Sunday marked the first step to a County Crown for the Pascack Valley Girls Soccer Team.

They came into this game a confident bunch, being winners of three in a row. With that being said, the Indians could not overlook Dumont, a decent team with a fantastic goalie.

Anyway, the Indians dominated the first half, having countless opportunities to take the lead. No matter how hard they tried, they just couldn't seem to get the ball past the Dumont keeper. At the half, the game was scoreless and the Indians were shaking their heads.

It wasn't until the second half where the Indians caught a break. With 32 minutes left in the game, Junior Amelia Della Pesca had a breakaway. The goalie decided to come out, but it didn't matter. Della Pesca put it into the back of the net and gave the Indians a lead they would not relinquish.

In the end, the game ended 1-0 and Pascack Valley would move on to the second round of the County Tournament. This is now their fourth win in a row, giving them the confidence they need to go far into this tournament.
